Restaurant with harbor view

The "Abbey Wharf" in Whitby is a versatile restaurant and bar distinguished by its picturesque location overlooking the harbour and its commitment to fresh, locally sourced ingredients. Situated in the charming coastal town of Whitby, the venue combines a modern, inviting atmosphere with a touch of maritime flair, establishing itself as a popular gathering spot for locals and tourists alike. It accommodates over 250 guests and spans multiple levels, including a spacious balcony from which visitors can observe the activities of fishing boats and the famous East and West Piers. The "Abbey Wharf" is not just a restaurant; it is also a venue for live music and private events, adding an extra cultural dimension.

Fresh local ingredients in Whitby

The interior of the "Abbey Wharf" is stylishly and thoughtfully designed. The main restaurant on the ground floor is open and airy, featuring large windows that offer views of the harbour, while the upper mezzanine level, complete with its own bar, provides a slightly more secluded option for reservations or private celebrations. The decor blends rustic elements like wooden furniture with modern accents, and the open kitchen showcases the chefs at work, highlighting the freshness and care put into the preparation. The balcony is particularly popular on sunny days, providing an unparalleled view and a feeling of being right in the thick of the coastal town's hustle and bustle. Regular live music on weekends, ranging from DJ sets to bands, contributes to a vibrant atmosphere that enhances the overall experience.

Live music events in Whitby

Culinary-wise, the "Abbey Wharf" is especially known for its fish dishes, which are delivered fresh daily by local suppliers like Lockers of Whitby. A definite favorite is the "Lockers of Whitby Cod," a juicy cod fillet fried in house-made crispy batter and served with a creamy tartar sauce – a dish that perfectly captures the maritime tradition of the region. Equally popular are the "Dynamite Prawns," crispy prawns served with a spicy sauce that adds a touch of heat and exotic flair. For meat lovers, there are grilled steaks such as the "21-Day Aged Sirloin," prepared over charcoal and known for its tenderness and smoky flavor. The sides, like hand-cut chips or fresh salad, complement the main dishes excellently.

Fish dishes from local suppliers

In addition to the restaurant, there is also a takeaway area that offers the same quality and is especially appreciated for its fish and chips – perfect for a stroll along the pier. The drinks menu is equally impressive, featuring a selection of traditional beers, including the house's own "Abbey Wharf Dry Hopped Blonde," as well as a variety of cocktails and over 20 gins, all freshly prepared by skilled bartenders. For dessert, the "Sticky Toffee Pudding," a warm, sweet dessert with a rich sauce, is often hailed as the perfect conclusion to a visit.

This place had only been open for a couple of weeks. Staff were friendly and helpful. We came in on a Monday lunchtime so not many people about. Balcony with a great view over the harbour and out to the sea beyond. We had kippers… absolutely fabulous, so tasty and the smokehouse that produces them is just up the road! The fish market is also just at the other side of the harbour… all local produce. The menu is great… a good selection including vegetarian options! Must come again to sample the mornay and the chowder! Great place well worth a visit! Back again! This time Mornay for me with new potatoes… absolutely delicious! For my partner it was the monk fish and he loved it! We came in the evening this time… a different ambience but was great. The tide was in in the harbour so we could see the water and lights reflecting outside the windows. Staff as before were helpful and service was quick.

We had a great meal here over the weekend. The food was so fresh and there were such great portions for the price. The great thing is that you are able to order and pay from your table so you don't have a big wait to be served. The only downside is that it was very noisy and there were a few dogs inside that were barking and as they were so busy the food was a little slow to come out. Having said that neither of these things would stop us from visiting again as these are not really things that the restaurant can control.

Geat food (however only one vegetarian option), a wide variety of beers and best placement by the tidal river

An excellent prawn mornay meal on Friday evening - highly recommend booking a table as it gets busy at weekends but the food, wine and ambience were all great!

Sometimes you get a pie that's hard with no meat. Sometimes the chips are cold and brittle. Sometimes your ice cream is meh. This place was none of those things. They do it properly, 10/10 great value for money. Would come again!

Very quiet but it is a Monday night mid January. Ordered pinwheel with new potatoes and gravy!!!!! Dreadful to say the least, new potatoes swimming in butter(should be the customers choice how much butter they want), gravy was dire not even sure what it tasted like and the pinwheel was an acquired taste and one that i won't part take in again, even my dog refused it and she is a labrador. Refused an offer for another dish as if first ain't good whats the rest like, took the offer offer a partial refund, as technically I didn't like it and it wasn't the chefs fault except for the gravy and swimming potatoes and got back a half refund, was expecting at least a tenner or better still £12 as it was £15.95. Won't be rushing back
